Drawing on images compiled for a monograph, Ron Athey will present a narrative that includes 32 years of performance images, giving context of the era they were made in: death rock, industrial, AIDS pandemic, post-AIDS. He will also touch on influences such as early RE/SEARCH tabloids, psycho/neuro acoustics, COUM transmissions, and Johanna Went, an American performance artist. Religious and esoteric traditions will be explored as well.
About the Speaker
Ron Athey is a London-based artist from Los Angeles. In 1981 he began performing with Rozz Williams as Premature Ejaculation, a performance and sound based duo. Athey’s torture trilogy Martyrs & Saints, 4 Scenes In A Harsh Life, and Deliverance, were presented in the UK, US, Europe, and Mexico. He is currently touring a solo performance, Incorruptible Flesh [Messiaic Remains], and a performative installation for 30 participants: Gifts of the Spirit: Automatic Writing. Pleading In The Blood: The Art and Performance of Ron Athey, was released this month by Intellect Press.
